Yale University Art Gallery reflects on “Natural Histories” in 19th-century American art

The Yale University Art Gallery recently installed “Natural Histories,” a special rotation in the American Paintings and Sculpture galleries. Developed in consultation with Yale School of the Environment faculty, this installation features nineteenth century American landscape painters whose works integrated aesthetic considerations with extensive study of the natural world to create stories of change, loss, and vulnerability in the landscape—stories that were legible to their contemporaries and continue to resonate today.
