For their 2022 Public Humanities grant project, School of the Environment students Dylan Feldmeier (MEsc ‘23) and Kaggie Orrick (PhD candidate) explored human-wildlife interactions in the Makgadikgadi region of Botswana. Their research ultimately took the form of a remarkable multimedia story-map of images, films, and maps that document human-wildlife conflicts in the region. These interactions are shaped by centuries of cattle-rearing practices which have transformed both the social and environmental characteristics of the region, and understanding these social-ecological intricacies has significant implications for conflict mitigation strategies.
