Event description:

This dialogue-based workshop will address major issues facing front line firefighters. We will use case studies to explore key theory and practice around risk management, strategy and tactics. By introducing Complex Adaptive Systems (CAS) research, we will attempt to build context around wildland firefighter line of duty fatal accidents, over 400 of which have occurred since 1994. Part of our exploration will be to discuss a growing concern that our current system of fire suppression places unreasonable demands on firefighting organizations, leadership and field personnel. A specific emphasis will be place on understanding how our current system may train and sustain behaviors that increase the vulnerability of firefighters.

We (humans) struggle to understand and work within complex adaptive systems. The result of human intervention can be catastrophic or incredibly beneficial and, frequently, outcome is the only thing that separates error from innovation. Understanding this struggle and how to work in a CAS is applicable to leaders and workers in every high-risk industry. The concepts presented in this workshop will challenge any participant to balance the art of decision making with the science of management.
