In 1594, the Florentine merchant Francesco Carletti began a voyage that led him to accidentally circumnavigate the world by the time he returned to Europe in 1602.  This talk discusses Carletti’s approach to describing nature during and after his travels.   What did it mean to be a global observer of nature in this era?  This talk will situate Carletti’s observations between the world of Renaissance natural history and the reevaluation of the senses in the era of Galileo’s The Assayer.
