Event description:
Maintaining Impermanence: Constructing Identity in the Philippines is an exhibition curated by Karina Encarnación, Alberto Martínez García, Sam Algas, Pericles Bien, and Marisa Crandall, showcasing the transformation of the archipelago’s built environment throughout its history. We examine the concept of impermanence in domestic architecture and how it has been challenged over the centuries, leading to a gradual erosion of cultural identities and a disconnection from the natural environment.
The exhibition will be at the North Gallery of the Yale School of Architecture, running from October 9 to November 15, 2025.
On Thursday, October 9, from 1:00 to 2:00 PM, the curators will host a roundtable with scholars Mae-ling Lokko (Yale School of Architecture), Roz Li (Bakas Pilipinas), and Ana Labrador (University of Melbourne). The conversation will focus on impermanence, adaptive reuse, climate adaptation, traditional knowledge, and conservation in the context of the Filipino built environment. Light refreshments will be provided at the end of the roundtable.
