Event description:
Join us for an evening conversation and Q&A with Bren Smith about his new book, Eat Like a Fish: My Adventures as a Fisherman Turned Restorative Ocean Farmer. In it, Smith chronicles his journey from commercial fishing to pioneering a 3D ocean farming system that rears kelp, oysters, mussels, and scallops in an aquaculture that removes greenhouse gasses from the atmosphere––an innovationTIME magazine awarded one of its 25 best inventions of 2017. Eat Like A Fish moves far beyond the science of seaweed to tell a story of both personal and ecological redemption.

In addition to founding Thimble Island Oyster Co., an ocean farm in Branford, CT, Bren Smith is the executive director of GreenWave, a non-profit that promotes 3D ocean farming around the world. He was named one of Rolling Stone magazine’s “25 People Shaping the Future” in 2017, and is a Ashoka and Echoing Green Climate Fellow. His work with GreenWave has earned it the European Union’s Sustania award, the Buckminster Fuller award for Ecological Design, and coverage in publications like The New York Times and National Geographic.

Chewing the Fat is the Yale Sustainable Food Program’s long-standing speaker series. All events are free and open to the public. This event is hosted in collaboration with the Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History.
