“Climate Change, Faith, and Organizing,” a public conversation with environmentalist, writer, and activist Bill McKibben, will take place on Friday, March 31, at 7 p.m. in the YDS Common Room. McKibben will be interviewed by YDS student Tyler Mark Nelson ‘24 M.Div., followed by questions from those gathered.
Questions at the center of this public conversation will include: How can climate issues be talked about as faith issues for people who have a sense of a Creator God? How have supposedly faithful people gone so far off course? What are the best ways to organize in times like these?
McKibben is co-founder of global grassroots climate campaign 350.org, Schumann Distinguished Scholar in Environmental Studies at Middlebury College, and a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He is a contributing writer to The New Yorker and, most recently, the founder of Third Act, which organizes people over age 60 for progressive change. McKibben is the author of the seminal The End of Nature and, more recently, The Flag, the Cross, and the Station Wagon: A Graying American Looks Back at His Suburban Boyhood and Wonders What the Hell Happened.
“The deepest religious insights on the relation between God, nature, and humans,” McKibben has written, “may not emerge until religious people, acting on the terms indicated by their traditions, join these movements. The act of engagement will itself spur new thinking, new understanding.”
Part of the Divinity School’s Transformational Leadership program, the event will also be broadcast on the YDS Livestream channel. For those attending in person, the public conversation will be followed by a reception. All are welcome!
