“Artists in Conversation | Eva Rothschild” (Yale Center for British Art)

About Eva Rothschild

Eva Rothschild was born in Dublin in 1971. She received a BA in fine art from the University of Ulster, Belfast, and an MA in fine art from Goldsmiths College, London. She works in a variety of materials, including aluminum, fabric, Jesmonite, and leather. Her work is primarily sculptural and often references the art movements of the 1960s and 1970s. Her practice explores the relationships between classical architecture, materiality, and New Age spirituality. Rothschild also works on major public and outdoor commissions. A Double Rainbow (2022) was commissioned by the Central Bank of Ireland and is a large-scale outdoor public sculpture in Dublin made from galvanized steel, high-gloss paint, and lacquer. My World and Your World (2020) is Rothschild’s first permanent commission in London and the first permanent artwork at King’s Cross. It stands fifty-two feet high and is made of steel. Rothschild describes the piece as a “social sculpture,” an invitation to explore the park and a place to connect with the community.

 

In 2014, Rothschild was elected to the Royal Academy of Arts. In 2019, she represented Ireland at the 58th Venice Biennale. Recent solo exhibitions have been held at the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, Melbourne; the Hepworth Wakefield and Kunstverein Hannover; Hugh Lane Museum, Dublin; Nasher Sculpture Center, Dallas; New Art Gallery, Walsall, UK; and Sonnaveld House, Rotterdam. In 2017, Rothschild’s work Empire (2011) was unveiled at the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden as part of the redeveloped Walker Art Center campus, marking her first permanent outdoor work in the United States. Her work is included in the collections of the Carnegie Museum, Pittsburgh; Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Tate Gallery, London; and Walker Art Center, Minneapolis. She lives and works in London.
