AUGUST 2023, BOSTON, MA – Oliver Lucier, of South Kingstown, Rhode Island, has been awarded the 2023 AMS/Graduate Fellowship in the History of Science.
The fellowship is awarded to a student in the process of completing a dissertation on the history of the weather, water, or climate sciences. The graduate fellowship carries a nine-month $20,000 stipend and supports one year of dissertation research. The goal of the graduate fellowship is to support dissertation topics in the history of the atmospheric, or related oceanic or hydrologic sciences, and to foster close working relations between historians and scientists.
Lucier is a doctoral candidate in the history of science at Yale University and received a BA in history and BS in earth science at Rice University. His dissertation title is, Classifying the Bioclimate from Climate Determinism to Climate Change, 1890-2010. Lucier states, “My dissertation analyzes the history of ecological classifications to illustrate why and how climatic variables were used to differentiate environmental regions, and subsequently how these classifications structured agricultural, developmental, and conservation projects.
